What Is a Pip in Forex? How to Calculate Pip Value

Every gain and loss in forex is measured in pips. Here is what a pip is and what it is worth.

30 0

A pip — short for "percentage in point" or "price interest point" — is the unit used to measure price movement in forex. Understanding what a pip is worth on your specific position size is one of the most fundamental skills in trading.

How big is a pip?

On most currency pairs, one pip is a movement of 0.0001 — the fourth decimal place.

If EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0851, that is one pip.

Japanese yen pairs are the exception. Because the yen trades at much higher nominal values, one pip on USD/JPY is a movement of 0.01 — the second decimal place.

What is a pipette?

Many brokers quote prices to five decimal places (or three for yen pairs). The fifth decimal place is called a pipette or fractional pip — it is one-tenth of a pip.

A move from 1.08500 to 1.08510 is one pip. A move from 1.08500 to 1.08501 is one pipette.

Pipettes give more precise pricing but the pip remains the standard unit for measuring trade results.

How to calculate pip value

Pip value depends on three things: the currency pair, your position size, and the quote currency.

For pairs where USD is the quote currency (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, etc.):

Pip value = 0.0001 × lot size

On a standard lot (100,000 units): 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10 per pip

On a mini lot (10,000 units): 0.0001 × 10,000 = $1 per pip

On a micro lot (1,000 units): 0.0001 × 1,000 = $0.10 per pip

For pairs where USD is the base currency (USD/CAD, USD/CHF, etc.):

Pip value = 0.0001 × lot size ÷ current price

At USD/CAD 1.3600 on a standard lot: 0.0001 × 100,000 ÷ 1.36 = $7.35 per pip (approximately)

For cross pairs (not involving USD):

Convert pip value to USD using the current USD rate for the quote currency. Your broker's platform typically calculates this automatically.

A worked example

You buy 0.50 lots of EUR/USD. Your stop is 30 pips away.

Pip value at 0.50 lots = $10 × 0.50 = $5 per pip

Maximum loss = 30 × $5 = $150

If your account is $15,000 and this loss represents 1%, that is correct sizing. If your account is $5,000, the same trade risks 3% — too high for most strategies.

Pip value for gold (XAU/USD)

Gold is different. One pip on XAU/USD is normally $0.10 (ten cents), and a standard lot controls 100 ounces — so one pip is worth $0.10 × 100 = $10 per pip. Some brokers call $0.01 a pip, which changes every pip figure by a factor of ten, so check yours.

A $1 move (10 pips) on one standard lot = $100. At current prices gold often moves $50 to $150 in a day, meaning a standard lot can swing $5,000 to $15,000 daily. Most traders use micro or mini lots on gold.

Why pip value matters before you trade

Knowing your pip value before entering converts an abstract "50 pip stop" into a concrete dollar amount. That is the number you compare against your risk budget.

A trader who does not know their pip value cannot know whether a trade is correctly sized. It is the link between price movement and account impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all brokers use the same pip definition?

For standard forex pairs, yes — the pip is universally the fourth decimal place (second for yen). Some brokers describe their quotes in pipettes (fifth decimal), which can cause confusion. Check your broker's documentation if you are unsure.

What is a good number of pips for a stop loss?

There is no universal answer. Stop placement should be based on where the trade idea is proven wrong — a swing low, an order block, a key level — not a fixed pip count. The pip value calculation then tells you whether that stop, combined with your position size, fits within your risk budget.

How many pips per day do forex pairs move?

Average daily ranges vary significantly by pair and market conditions. Major pairs during active sessions typically move between 50 and 150 pips on a normal day. Pairs involving the yen or commodity currencies can move more. This is not a target — it is context for setting realistic take-profit and stop-loss distances.

Is a higher pip value always better?

Not inherently. Higher pip value means each pip move has more impact — both on winners and losers. What matters is that your position size is calibrated so the maximum loss on any trade stays within your risk percentage, regardless of the pip value.
