Pip Value Calculator: What Every Pip Is Worth on Your Account
Knowing your pip value before entering a trade converts abstract pip targets into real dollar amounts. The formula is simpler than most traders expect.
Before you can size a position correctly, you need to know what one pip is worth. The number changes with lot size, currency pair, and sometimes the current exchange rate. This guide covers the calculation for every common scenario.
EUR/USD, GBP/USD and most USD-quoted pairs
For pairs where USD is the quote currency:
Pip value = 0.0001 × lot size (in units)
| Lot type | Units | Pip value |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 100,000 | $10.00 |
| Mini (0.10) | 10,000 | $1.00 |
| Micro (0.01) | 1,000 | $0.10 |
| Nano (0.001) | 100 | $0.01 |
At 0.25 lots on EUR/USD: pip value = $10 × 0.25 = $2.50 per pip
USD/CAD, USD/CHF and USD-base pairs
For pairs where USD is the base currency, pip value in USD depends on the current exchange rate:
Pip value = (0.0001 × lot size) ÷ current price
Example: USD/CAD at 1.3600, 1 standard lot:
(0.0001 × 100,000) ÷ 1.36 = $7.35 per pip
The value fluctuates with the exchange rate.
USD/JPY
One pip on USD/JPY is 0.01 (second decimal), not 0.0001.
Pip value = (0.01 × lot size) ÷ current price
At 155.00, 1 standard lot: (0.01 × 100,000) ÷ 155 = $6.45 per pip
Cross pairs (no USD)
For pairs like EUR/GBP or AUD/JPY, convert the pip value to USD using the quote currency's USD rate.
EUR/GBP at 0.8550, GBP/USD at 1.2700, 1 standard lot:
- Pip in GBP: 0.0001 × 100,000 = £10
- Convert to USD: £10 × 1.2700 = $12.70 per pip
Your trading platform calculates this automatically. Understanding the logic tells you why the number changes as exchange rates move.
Gold (XAU/USD)
Gold uses a 100-ounce contract. One pip = $0.01 movement.
Pip value = 0.01 × 100 = $1 per pip per standard lot
At 0.50 lots on gold: $0.50 per pip
A $10 move (1,000 pips) on 0.50 lots = $500.
How pip value connects to position sizing
If your risk per trade is $100 and your stop is 50 pips:
Required pip value = $100 ÷ 50 = $2.00 per pip
Working back to lot size on EUR/USD: $2.00 ÷ $10 = 0.20 lots
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does pip value change on some pairs?
For pairs where USD is not the quote currency, the pip value in USD depends on the current exchange rate. As the rate changes, the dollar value of a pip changes proportionally.
Does pip value matter for setting targets?
Yes. A 50-pip target at $1 per pip (mini lot) = $50. The same 50-pip target at $10 per pip (standard lot) = $500. Target and stop placement are the same regardless of lot size; what changes is the dollar impact.
Is pip value the same across all brokers?
Yes, for the same pair and lot size. Pip value is determined by the contract size and exchange rate, not the broker.
What is a pip vs a point?
In MetaTrader and some platforms, "point" refers to the fifth decimal place (one-tenth of a pip). A 10-point move = 1 pip. Some indices and CFDs measure movement in points that are not pips — check the contract specification.
Can I trade without knowing pip value?
Technically yes, but you cannot size positions correctly without it. Not knowing your pip value means not knowing what your stop loss actually costs if triggered — which makes risk management impossible.
