Forex Scalping: How It Works and Whether It Is Right for You

Scalping is not faster trading — it is a completely different relationship with the market. Most people who try it should not.

Scalping is a trading style where positions are held for seconds to a few minutes, targeting moves of 2 to 15 pips per trade. A scalper might take 10 to 50 trades in a single session, seeking to accumulate small, consistent gains.

It is the most demanding style of trading and the one most commonly attempted by beginners drawn to the idea of frequent activity. Most of them lose money faster than they would with a slower approach.

What scalping actually requires

Execution speed. A 5-pip target does not allow for slow fills. Scalping requires tight spreads, fast execution, and a broker that does not requote aggressively. Slippage of 1 pip on a 5-pip target is 20% of the expected gain.

Tight spreads. If the spread is 1.5 pips and your target is 5 pips, you need a 6.5-pip move just to profit 5 pips. The cost-to-target ratio is far more sensitive for scalpers than for traders targeting 50 or 100 pips.

Concentration. Scalping multiple positions or instruments simultaneously is nearly impossible. One pair, one chart, full attention.

Defined rules for exit. With a 5-minute hold time, decisions cannot be deliberated. The plan for entry, stop, and target must be determined before the session and executed mechanically during it.

Low spread, low latency broker. This is not optional for scalping. ECN accounts with raw spreads and commission are usually more cost-effective for scalpers than standard spread accounts.

Common scalping approaches

Range scalping: in a clearly bounded range (for example, early Asian session consolidation), trade bounces from the range boundaries. Entry near the low, target near the high, stop below the low. Works in low-volatility conditions; fails when the range breaks.

Momentum scalping: enter in the direction of a strong breakout move and ride the momentum for a few pips. Requires fast execution and a clear entry trigger — a break and close above a level, an RSI reading confirming momentum.

News scalping: enter immediately after a high-impact release in the direction of the initial spike. Requires very fast execution, awareness of spread widening, and the ability to handle erratic price behavior in the minutes after a release.

Why spread matters so much

At 10 pips target, a 1.5-pip spread represents 15% of the trade's potential gain. At 100 pips target, the same spread represents 1.5%.

Scalpers typically need pairs with spreads below 1 pip — EUR/USD and GBP/USD during peak hours — and execution that fills at the indicated price rather than slipping through it.

On gold, where spreads can be $0.30 to $0.80, scalping becomes significantly harder because the spread can consume 15% to 80% of a typical $1–$2 scalping target.

The psychological demand

Scalping produces very fast feedback. Losses and wins occur rapidly, and the natural responses — frustration after a loss, overconfidence after a win — have no time to settle before the next decision is due.

Many experienced traders find scalping psychologically exhausting in a way that swing trading is not. The number of decisions per session is an order of magnitude higher, and each decision must be executed at speed.

When scalping is not the answer

If you are new to trading, scalping is likely to accelerate losses rather than generate gains. The errors of judgment that all beginners make happen many times per session rather than a few times per day. The feedback is faster, but so is the account depletion.

A more productive path: develop a working swing or intraday strategy first, prove its edge over 50 to 100 trades, and then consider whether the method can be applied to shorter timeframes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do brokers allow scalping?

Most ECN and STP brokers allow scalping. Some market-maker brokers restrict or penalise very short-hold trades. Check the terms of service before scalping on any account, particularly prop firm evaluation accounts where some firms restrict holding time.

What is the best pair to scalp?

EUR/USD has the tightest spreads and highest liquidity of any pair, making it the most cost-effective for scalping during the London and New York sessions. GBP/USD is also popular, though spreads are slightly wider and moves are often faster.

Can scalping be profitable?

Yes, but the bar for profitability is higher than for longer-hold strategies because costs (spread, commission, slippage) consume a larger portion of each trade's potential gain. A scalper must win at a higher rate or have a better fill quality to achieve the same net result as a swing trader.

How many pips per trade should a scalper target?

Typically 5 to 20 pips, depending on the pair, the session, and the approach. Targets below 5 pips are extremely cost-sensitive — a 1-pip spread on a 3-pip target represents 33% of the gain before slippage.

Is scalping suitable for people who trade part-time?

Generally no. Scalping requires sustained concentration during specific high-liquidity windows. Checking in for 30 minutes while managing other tasks is not compatible with scalping. It suits traders who can dedicate a continuous block of time to a single session — typically the first hour to two hours of London or New York.
